Press Release from Spectrum Laboratories, Inc.CellMax® Implant Membrane for Drug Discovery & DevelopmentRancho Dominguez, CA – July 26, 2010: Spectrum Laboratories, Inc. offers a proprietary hollow fiber membrane implant technology that provides a true-to-life response for drug screening and cancer research. The CellMax Implant Membranes are perfectly suited for implantation. Made from modified Polyvinylidene Difluoride (mPVDF), these hollow fiber membranes are biocompatible, resistant to cell adhesion, hydrophobic, and resistant to a wide variety of organic solvents, including most aqueous acids and bases. Furthermore, these hollow fibers can be heat sealed and autoclaved without affecting the molecular weight cut off or changing the membrane performance. With a Teflon-like surface, the CellMax Implant Membranes have been shown to be biocompatible in various animal models for periods exceeding 14 days. Implanted into a host animal, cell lines grown within CellMax Implant Membranes are not subject to immunological attack by the host animal. After selecting a subset of compounds with the hollow fiber encapsulation assay, the activity of the compounds can confirmed using the classical testing models currently used for evaluating these types of chemotherapeutic agents. Multiple cell lines have been grown both in vitro and in vivo within the CellMax Implant Membranes. CellMax Implant Membranes containing cancer cell lines have been implanted into mice and used to screen for compounds having anti-cancer activity. Similarly, CellMax Implant Membranes containing HIV-infected cell lines have been implanted into mice and used to screen for compounds having anti-HIV activity. CellMax Implant Membranes have a number of important advantages over the current xenographic model. The methodology provides for a 10-day assay, instead of a 60-day assay. It also uses small amounts of the test compound, and fewer animals are needed. Multiple cell lines can be tested in the same animal model and they are compatible with different cell lines. These advantages allow the hollow fiber assay to quickly prescreen drugs for clinical studies.
